Evolve with the Fall: Tips for a Happier & Healthier Fall Season

Schedule a check-up with your family doctor:

We may be more than halfway through 2024, but it's not too late to schedule an annual visit for yourself or your child!  It's important to stay up-to-date with doctors visits.  Your healthcare provider can use an annual physical to track existing conditions, monitor your health, update vaccinations, perform any necessary exams, and discuss risks for hereditary diseases that may run in your family.

Get Outside & Stay Active:

As the weather cools, it's important to make sure you get outside!  Spending time outside can boost your mood and your overall wellbeing.  Take in the colors of the changing leaves with an autumn bike ride, help a neighbor rake their yard, or meet up with a friend for a hot tea to-go and a walk around the neighborhood.  There's so much we can continue to do outside and stay active even in cooler seasons.

Here are some more ideas to keep moving with simple activities!

Make healthy food choices:

Eating a diet rich with whole fruits & vegetables can give your immune system a boost as we enter cold & flu season!  Healthy eating habits can also prevent many chronic health conditions.   Making changes can be a challenge.  Here's some inspiration from our Dietitian Nutritionist team.

Be prepared for cold & flu season:

Focusing on washing your hands and disinfecting surfaces in your home can help prevent the spread of illnesses.  Millions of people get flu every year, hundreds of thousands of people are hospitalized and thousands to tens of thousands of people die from flu-related causes every year.   Every flu season is different and it affects people in different ways.  Complications of flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma, or diabetes.

An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. Vaccination has been shown to have many benefits including reducing the risk of flu illnesses, hospitalizations and even the risk of flu-related death in children.  Inspired Health Group has three flu vaccine clinics for patients this fall

Focus on your mental health:

Whether it's a change in the season, a shift in your life circumstances, or for a reason you can't pinpoint — we all struggle with our mental health from time to time!  Cooler months can feel lonely as summer BBQs, outdoor concerts and events wind down, but knowing you have support is essential.  We are here to help!

If you're looking for ways to improve your emotional wellness, try these options to start:

  • Find a hobby that allows you to express yourself
  • Stay active
  • Practice being mindful through meditation or yoga
  • Get involved in a community event
  • Keep a daily journal to write down your thoughts and feelings
  • Stay social with friends and family, even if it's through phone call or video chat
  • Seek help if you feel you need support

Your Inspired Health Group care team can help connect your to behavioral health resources.  Contact us over the phone or via patient portal if you could use some support getting your mental and emotional health back on track!

And although we’re always here to help, we get it - it can be difficult sometimes to express feeling overwhelmed with some factors that influence your health and wellbeing one-on-one with your care provider. These factors may include financial issues, housing, transportation, health insurance, abuse, needing a higher level of care, substance use, domestic violence, home safety, lack of support, mental health, and trouble affording medication.  IHG patients are welcomed to utilize Catholic Medical Partner's Self Referral Program.

Get the recommended amount of sleep nightly:

As the sun sets earlier in the evening, fall is a great time to get your sleep habits back on track.  Adults should get the recommended amount of at least 7 hours of sleep a sleep per night.  For adults, getting less than seven hours of sleep a night on a regular basis has been linked with poor health, including weight gain, having a body mass index of 30 or higher, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and depression.
