Ease into Spring Physical Activity with Stretching
Winter can often be a more sedentary season for those of us in WNY. Spring offers a season of renewal, and is a great time to recommit yourself to physical activity. Physical activity offers a variety of benefits to our body, mind, and spirit well-being. However, after a period of lack of activity, it's important to take things slow, wake up your muscles and listen to your body.
One way to ease your body into physical activity is by stretching. Stretching improves flexibility, which increases performance during physical activities and blood flow to muscles, thereby decreasing healing time and soreness, and improves mobility, which prevents injuries. Physician Assistant, Mark Eberhard, shares 4 simple stretching tips to inspire you to ease into physical activity this spring. As with any new physical activity, ease into it and talk to your care provider for considerations specific to your health and well-being.
Use these helpful tips when stretching:
- Focus on major muscle groups such as neck, shoulders, lower back, thighs, and calves.
- Stretch symmetrically to ensure equal flexibility on both sides.
- DO NOT BOUNCE! This is one of the most common mistakes with stretching and can actually lead to tighter muscles and increase risk of injury.
- Hold your stretches for at least 30 seconds.
